Some love stories begin with a chance encounter. Others start with a swipe on a dating app. Jaden and Cody's began with two mothers who decided their children ought to meet. And when two mothers get an idea like that, there's usually little point in standing in their way.
Their mothers had become friends through a mutual connection, and somewhere along the way, a little matchmaking operation began. They knew their children well enough to believe something special might come of an introduction. So Jaden and Cody agreed to a first date, beginning with sushi and bowling. Nothing elaborate, just good food, a little friendly competition, and two people getting to know each other. But the conversation came easily, the laughter was genuine, and before they knew it, the evening had flown by. Neither wanted it to end, so they headed back to Jaden's parents' house and played cards well into the night. Apparently, their mothers were onto something.
There was one small complication. Jaden was leaving for Italy that week to attend a writing retreat. Not exactly ideal timing for a budding romance, but the distance didn't discourage either of them. They talked every single day while she was away, and by the time she returned, Cody knew he wanted to see where things could go. He asked Jaden to be his girlfriend, making their relationship official and giving their mothers something to celebrate.
As the months passed, forty-minute drives became part of their routine. Eventually, Cody decided he'd rather spend that time with Jaden than on the road, so he moved closer and got an apartment. Before long, Jaden moved in, too. What started with sushi and bowling had turned into a shared life filled with everyday routines, laughter, and the comfort of having someone to come home to. Nearly two years later, Cody knew he was ready for marriage. Jaden, meanwhile, had apparently already started planning the wedding. All that remained was for Cody to ask.
Cody wanted the proposal to be special, so he planned a trip to Connecticut, somewhere Jaden had never visited. He chose a beautiful state park with historic buildings and arranged a picnic, with an engagement ring safely tucked inside the basket. Everything was coming together perfectly, except for one small detail. Cody was nervous. Very nervous.
He knew he wanted to marry Jaden, but asking the question was another matter entirely. So nervous, in fact, that he returned to the car three separate times to make sure the ring was still in the picnic basket. Three times. The ring hadn't moved, but apparently Cody needed convincing. It's remarkable how one small piece of jewelry can make a grown man question his memory.
Eventually, Cody gathered himself and found the right moment. Surrounded by history, in a place neither would ever forget, he asked Jaden to become his wife. She said yes. After two years together, countless miles traveled, and three unnecessary trips to the car, they were officially engaged.
Today, Jaden and Cody share a duplex with their puppy, Worf, and a life they've built together. Those forty-minute drives are behind them, replaced by the simple pleasure of coming home to each other. Their days are filled with the familiar routines, little laughs, and shared responsibilities that come with building a future together.
And perhaps that's the best part of their story. It wasn't one grand gesture that brought them here. It was a first date neither wanted to end, conversations across an ocean, and two people who kept choosing each other. Their mothers may have brought them together, but Jaden and Cody did the rest. What began with sushi and bowling has become a home, a family, and a lifetime of plans. And someday, when they're telling this story years from now, there's little doubt Jaden will still be laughing about Cody checking that picnic basket three times.
