Chapter One: Sometimes Love Deserves a Second Chance
Some people enter your life at just the right time. Others arrive a little early, leave you wondering what might have been, and somehow find their way back. For Lani and Brennan, love needed a second introduction.
Their story began on Bumble in 2023, followed by a first date in January 2024. By their second date, Lani already felt something special about Brennan. She compared their connection to a perfectly paired wine and filet mignon. Both wonderful on their own, but somehow even better together. Unfortunately, the timing wasn’t right, and after three dates, they went their separate ways.
But June had other plans.
The two reconnected that summer, supposedly as friends. At least, that’s what Lani thought. Before long, their conversations became increasingly flirtatious, and she finally asked the question they had both been avoiding. “Are we platonic?” Brennan’s response said plenty. “About that… I’ve been meaning to talk to you about that.” It wasn’t exactly a grand romantic speech, but it did the job.
Lani wasn’t entirely convinced they should try again. After all, they’d already been down this road once. But something had changed. The timing was better, their connection was stronger, and by October 2024, they were officially a couple. Brennan admired Lani’s ambition and the experiences she introduced into his life. Lani appreciated how naturally he fit into the world she had already built. Neither needed the other to become someone different. They simply made each other’s lives better.
Then came Super Bowl Sunday in February 2025. While ordering pizza at a friend’s house, Lani mentioned her preference for pineapple, ham, and mushrooms. Brennan, apparently willing to overlook this questionable combination, casually announced, “Even though you like pineapples on your pizza… I’ll still love you.” Lani froze. Had he really just said that for the first time? In front of everyone? When she asked him later, Brennan confirmed it. He wanted everyone to know. And just like that, somewhere between football, friends, and pizza, three little words became another unforgettable part of their story.
Chapter Two: A Declaration of Love and a Celebration of Heritage
By July 2026, Brennan knew exactly where their relationship was headed. During a trip to Toronto, he surprised Lani by getting down on one knee and delivering what she affectionately calls his “Declaration.” He spoke about his love for her and the future he wanted them to share. His hands were shaking, Lani’s mother was happily celebrating behind him, and Brennan was so caught up in the moment that he forgot one important detail. He never actually asked Lani to marry him.
After a few seconds of stunned silence, Lani simply slipped her finger into the ring. Some questions don’t need to be asked when two people already know the answer.
With their engagement came an opportunity to celebrate not only their relationship but also the families and traditions that helped shape it. When planning their Madison, Wisconsin engagement photography session with Portraits by Sean, Brennan suggested incorporating traditional Filipino attire into their portraits. It was a thoughtful idea, especially given Lani’s Filipino heritage and the importance of family in her life.
Lani’s mother purchased Brennan’s Barong Tagalog in the Philippines, while Lani selected her own traditional outfit with her mother’s birthday in mind. Seeing them dressed together would mean something special to her mother, and that alone made the experience worthwhile. Their Filipino engagement portraits became more than beautiful photographs. They represented family, tradition, and two people embracing the different experiences that brought them together.
That connection will continue after their wedding. Lani and Brennan plan to honeymoon in the Philippines, gather with family for a reception, and meet relatives they have yet to know in person. Their Madison engagement session offered a glimpse into that future, one where old traditions and new memories will always have a place alongside each other.
For Portraits by Sean, engagement photography is about more than finding beautiful light or the perfect background. It’s about understanding the people standing in front of the camera and what makes their relationship worth celebrating. For Lani and Brennan, those photographs carry the story of a second chance, a nervous proposal in Toronto, a mother’s thoughtful gift, and a family heritage they are proud to share.
Their journey hasn’t followed a perfectly straight road, but perhaps that’s what makes it so meaningful. They found each other, went their separate ways, and discovered something even better when they returned. And years from now, when Lani and Brennan look back at their engagement photographs, they’ll remember more than what they wore or where they stood. They’ll remember a time when the future was wide open, their families were part of the celebration, and the person standing beside them was exactly where they belonged.
