I. The Morning of Anticipation
Katie and Matt's wedding day began with quiet excitement in the air. From that first meeting in dental school to every milestone since, life has been a whirlwind and it all led them here, ready to begin their next chapter together. Katie started her morning at Heart of Glass Salon, where hair was styled with care, before heading back to the Oaklander Hotel to finish makeup surrounded by family and friends. The Oaklander, nestled in the Schenley Farms Historic District, offers not only modern elegance but also sits steps away from Pittsburgh landmarks like the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and the Point, reminders of the blend of history and life that would weave through their day.
Before long, the couple and their families gathered at a nearby Airbnb close to Schenley Park. The house itself felt like a character in the story, filled with eclectic artwork, vibrant colors, and quirky details like a James Baldwin poster in the dining room, a pair of stylish M&M statues, and even a snow globe that proudly displayed “Pittsburgh.” These touches spoke of joy and personality, the kind of little things that make a wedding morning memorable.
The home buzzed with activity. Shoes lined the doorway, sandals, crocs, sneakers, and dress shoes, as family and friends moved in and out of rooms getting ready. The dining table held a bouquet bursting with calla lilies, anthuriums, hydrangeas, and carnations, while the bride’s mother, Charlotte, looked radiant in purple and could not help but share her excitement: “Matt is easy going,” she said with a smile, clearly thrilled for her daughter’s match.
Upstairs, Katie’s dress was photographed draped over abstract art and hanging near a typewriter, images that captured the creative and thoughtful setting. Lay flat shots of her heels, purse, wedding invitation, perfume, and jewelry told their own story of elegance and personality. Downstairs, conversations flowed, pies sat cooling on the counter, and a sign in the dining room read simply: “Congratulations and much love, Katie and Matt.” It was a morning built on anticipation and surrounded by love.
When Katie finally came downstairs in her gown, the room grew still for a moment. “There she goes,” someone whispered, and another voice chimed in softly, “Cute.” With smiles and laughter, the family prepared to step into the next chapter of the day.
II. First Look and Ceremony at Phipps Conservatory
The first look took place outside near one of the Schenley buildings. The moment Katie and Matt saw one another, they embraced and kissed, their joy unmistakable. Photos captured them holding hands in the grass as the sun played hide and seek between the clouds, casting soft light over their happiness.
From there, the couple made their way to Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, one of Pittsburgh’s most beloved wedding venues. Nestled inside Schenley Park, Phipps is a haven of natural beauty, where every corner holds something alive and blooming. Guests arriving for the private event walked past a sign welcoming them to Katie and Matt’s wedding, pausing to admire waterfalls, lush greenery, and the sunlight filtering through towering glass walls.
As the couple wandered through the gardens for portraits, guests whispered words of awe. One mother turned to her daughter and asked, “Did you see the princess?” as Katie glided past in her gown. They posed by statues, beneath hanging leaves, near mini waterfalls, and among the tall trees that created a cathedral of nature.
The ceremony space was arranged outside, where wooden chairs faced a small waterfall. Rocks, plants, and the surrounding conservatory framed the altar. On each chair lay a program welcoming guests to the celebration. The DJ set up behind the seats, filling the space with soft music like “Truly Madly Deeply” as family and friends began to gather. Guests fanned themselves with heart shaped fans, snapped Polaroids for the guest book, and chatted as anticipation grew.
Then came the moment everyone had been waiting for. Cheers rose as the groom and groomsmen walked in, followed by flower children that made the crowd laugh with their sweet shoes and big smiles. When Katie appeared, the entire crowd stood.
The officiant invited everyone to be seated and began the ceremony. An Irish blessing was read, vows were exchanged, and with joyful hearts, Katie and Matt were pronounced husband and wife. Their first kiss as a married couple was met with cheers, applause, and a cascade of flowers tossed into the air as they recessed down the aisle together.
III. A Celebration to Remember
Inside Phipps, the celebration began. Guests sipped drinks from the bar, nibbled on appetizers like quesadillas and sandwiches, and filled the guest book with Polaroid portraits. Black and white photos were taken in a nearby lounge, while others mingled at tables dressed with white cloths, wooden chairs, and vases of flowers.
The reception opened with heartfelt toasts. Katie’s father began with warmth and humor, recalling his first time meeting Matt over lunch in Bloomfield and jokingly admitting, “Did that detail matter?” The audience laughed, but he also spoke thoughtfully about marriage as a book filled with many chapters, all worth savoring.
Katie’s man of honor, Billy, followed, calling her “the best person I know” and describing Matt as kind, sincere, and effortless in his ability to bring joy. His toast circled back to his love for both of them, a tribute that left the room touched. The best man, Matt’s lifelong friend, brought levity, joking about their college days, broken bed frames, and their bond as “brothers.” He also shared how he had once advised Matt not to reach out to Katie when Matt first confessed his crush, a decision everyone was grateful Matt had ignored. The laughter and tears wove together seamlessly, painting a portrait of friendship, love, and family.
Dinner and conversation gave way to dancing. The bride and groom twirled into the room, Matt spinning Katie around and lifting her up to cheers from the crowd. Soon the dance floor was packed, lit with LED lights sparkling against the ceiling. Guests danced to classics like “Dancing Queen,” sang along to “Closer,” and erupted with excitement to “Hey Ya” by Outkast.
The cake, a stereo shaped design decorated in blue and white with cherries, was another detail guests loved. Tables were adorned with flickering candles, and the night felt alive with joy. The celebration built toward the last moments, with the DJ calling for cheers for the bride and groom before the final song, “Last Dance.” Katie and Matt swayed together, exchanging smiles and hugs with family and friends as others joined them in a circle.
The night ended with clapping, laughter, and one last cheer as the lights came back on. Guests began filing out to the waiting shuttles that would return them to the Oaklander Hotel, while others lingered, taking home flowers from the tables as small keepsakes of the day.
For Katie and Matt, it was more than a wedding. It was the start of something lasting, a day filled with family, friends, laughter, and the kind of love that makes people believe in happy endings.
