Deer Valley YMCA Campground and Lake: Mandy and Sam

It Started on the Water

Sam and Mandy were both 18 when they met. They had grown up only twenty minutes apart in Annapolis, Maryland, yet their paths didn't cross until 2018, just before their first semester at the University of Maryland.

It happened on a kayaking trip. Their guides made a wrong turn, turning what should have been a simple outing into eight hours on the water. Sam and Mandy spent those hours paddling, talking, laughing and getting to know one another. By the time the day was over, two strangers had become close friends.

They were nearly inseparable during their first semester of college, and by their second semester freshman year, that friendship had quietly become something more. The years ahead would take them through school, summers in different cities and eventually careers that kept them across the country from one another for years at a time. Through the distance and change, they continued to find new ways to love and appreciate each other.

Eventually, Seattle became home for both of them. Years after that first kayaking trip, Sam decided it was time for their next adventure.

Back to Deer Valley

For Mandy, Deer Valley YMCA Family Campground wasn't simply a beautiful place. Surrounded by the peaceful waters of Deer Valley Lake, it was part of her childhood. She had spent several summers there with her family, surrounded by trees, trails, open sky and the quiet beauty of the lake. Sam understood that Deer Valley already held a lifetime of memories for Mandy. He simply wanted to give her one more.

That became especially clear while planning the surprise proposal with the photographer. Sam took the time to explain why Deer Valley was so meaningful to Mandy and her family. There were phone calls, maps, screenshots and conversations about locations. Every detail was considered, from where Mandy would stand to how the photographer could remain out of sight until the right moment. It wasn't simply about finding a beautiful backdrop. It was about understanding Mandy's story and making sure the moment felt like it belonged there.

When the day arrived, Deer Valley provided everything else. Tall trees surrounded them as the quiet waters of Deer Valley Lake stretched into the distance. It was peaceful, familiar and deeply personal, a place connected to Mandy's past that was about to become part of their future.

Then came Sam's Academy Award-worthy diversion. He acted a little frazzled, just enough to keep Mandy from realizing what was happening. Then, without hesitation, he took a knee. All those phone calls, maps, screenshots and carefully planned details suddenly came down to one simple question and one very important answer.

There is something fitting about their story returning to the water. At 18, a wrong turn on a kayaking trip gave Sam and Mandy eight unexpected hours together and the beginning of a friendship neither could have predicted. Years later, Sam brought Mandy back to the water to ask her to spend the rest of her life with him. This time, there was no wrong turn. Sam knew exactly where he was going.
